13 from CMS win art awards

Three Charlotte-Mecklenburg students won first-place awards in the annual state PTA Reflections art competition.

They are among 13 CMS students who finished among the top three in various arts categories. The competition includes divisions for both performing and visual arts.

Two of the first-place finishers are from Barringer Academic Center in west Charlotte.

First-place winners, each of whom advances to national competition, are Kyle Overton, a second-grader at Barringer Academic Center; Ruth Swallow, a seventh-grader at Davidson IB Middle; and Ashley Phykitt, a fifth-grader at Barringer Academic Center.

Kyle won in the Film Production category (Primary Division), Ruth in Literature (Middle), and Ashley in the Photography competition (Primary).

Students competed in four levels -- Primary (pre-K through grade 2), Intermediate (grades 3-5), Middle (grades 6-8) and Senior (grades 9-12).

National winners will be announced in April or May. The state winners will be honored at a reception May 30 in Greensboro.

These are the CMS winners:

Dance Choreography: Ria Chheda, second grade, Elon Park Elementary, second place in Primary; Austin Forst, sixth grade, Jay Robinson Middle, third place in Middle.

Film Production: Kyle Overton, second grade, Barringer Academic Center, first place in Primary; Aneesha Raj, fourth grade, Croft Community School, third place in Intermediate; Ruth Swallow, seventh grade, Davidson IB Middle, first place in Middle; Katrina Reynolds, 12th grade, Ardrey Kell High, second place in Senior.

Music: Rachel Witner, fifth grade, Beverly Woods Elementary, second place in Intermediate.

Photography: Emily Parker, first grade, Torrence Creek Elementary, third place in Primary; Ashley Phykitt, fifth grade, Barringer Academic Center, first place in Intermediate; Andrew Fairman, sixth grade, Randolph Middle, third place in Middle; Matthew Brien, 12th grade, Harding University High, third place in Senior.
