  • The American Red Cross offers these tips for avoiding health problems in hot and humid weather:

Slow down. Avoid strenuous activities in the hottest hours of the day.

Dress for summer. Wear lightweight light-colored clothing, which reflects heat and sunlight.

Eat and drink right. Foods high in protein burn more body fuel and raise your inner temperature. And be sure to drink plenty of water – even if you don't feel thirsty.

Avoid the sun. Staying in air conditioning is best, but sitting under a shady tree is not a bad idea either.

Light-colored clothing, plenty of water, a shady spot – it's time to get that midsummer checklist ready: Meteorologists predict temperatures in the upper 90s today across the Charlotte metro region.

The hottest weather since the first week of last August is forecast, with readings almost 10 degrees warmer than anything we've experienced so far this year.

“We're predicting 97 degrees for Charlotte, and some 98-degree readings not far away,” said Harry Gerapetritis, of the National Weather Service office in Greer, S.C.

Gerapetritis said anyone planning to spend time outdoors today will need to prepare for the heat and accompanying high humidity. But, he added, the intense heat will be short-lived.

Sunday's predicted high is 90, and maximum readings most of next week are expected to be in the upper 80s.

This afternoon's heat index – a combination of the impact of temperature and humidity – is expected to exceed 100 degrees in parts of the region. Heat indexes approaching 110 degrees are forecast today in the Sandhills southeast of Charlotte.
