Students can question candidates

Students will have the chance to question political candidates at the Kids Voting Candidate Debate and Forum for Youth.

The events provide an opportunity for students, parents, leaders and others to learn about local issues and the candidates.

On Tuesday, Charlotte mayoral candidates Anthony Foxx, a Democrat, and John Lassiter, a Republican, will debate student questions. The event will take place 6-8 p.m. at ImaginOn, 300 E 7th St. Charlotte Observer Editorial Page Editor Taylor Batten will moderate.

On Oct. 20, candidates for school board Districts 1-6 will answer student questions, 6-8 p.m. at ImaginOn. Charlotte Observer Editor Rick Thames will moderate.

Students may submit written or video questions for the candidates and learn about the elected offices they seek by visiting the Candidate Debate and Forum for Youth Web page, accessible from www.kidsvoting.org. Standards-based teaching resources are also available there.

The events are free and open to the public. Students will be given seating priority.

Videos of the debate and forum will be available on the Web courtesy of the N.C. Center for Voter Education.
