Mary and Buddy Ivey

Love letters
We’re looking for young married couples to tell us how they fell in love. How did you meet? What were your first impressions? How was your first date? What attracted you to each other?

Mary and Buddy, both 60, had known each other for more than 25 years. They didn't get romantic until Buddy made a phone call six years ago.

The listener: Buddy's wife left him in 2003. Since we had been friends for so long and he knew I'd been through a divorce, he called and asked if I would be willing to talk to him. Naturally, I said yes. Sometimes all you need is for someone to sit and really listen to what you're saying. I informed him I would be praying for him.

The trucker: Buddy is a long-distance trucker. Every time he came through the Huntersville area where I live, he would come by and we would talk. One afternoon we were standing in my front yard talking, and my grown son, Bryan, walked by. Buddy informed him that he was planning to kiss me and asked if that was OK. Bryan said, "Knock yourself out." So we kissed.

The phone call: About three weeks later, one night on the phone, Buddy proposed. I informed him that he was crazy and needed to take more time to think things through. However, way deep down I knew I was falling for him. He proposed two more times, finally telling me that this would be the last time. I wasted no time in saying, "Yes."

The second time: We were married in June 2004 when both of us were 55 years old. Believe me, it is lovelier the second time around. I would not change anything. He is not perfect and neither am I, but we are definitely happy together. Kathy Haight
