A high-end apartment complex under construction in the SouthPark area took a step closer to completion Wednesday, with a “topping out” ceremony in which workers celebrated the placement of the structure’s highest steel beam.
Encore SouthPark will have 280 apartments, and its projected completion date is in the fourth quarter this year. The eight-story apartment building is one of five underway in Charlotte by developer Woodfield Investments, including complexes in NoDa, the Northlake area, uptown and South End.
“This is a significant investment in Charlotte,” said Chad Hagler of Woodfield Investments. He said the SouthPark project is almost four years in the making, as Woodfield started examining the site in mid-2011.
Charlotte is in the midst of a major apartment boom, with more than 10,000 units under construction and about the same number proposed or planned. That’s a record high for the city, as developers bet a surging Charlotte population will drive demand for the new apartments.
