The Charlotte Observer has named Bernie Heller as chief revenue officer and vice president, Publisher Ann Caulkins announced Tuesday. Heller joins the Observer on Sept. 5 from The State, the Observer’s sister paper in Columbia.
Heller, who has an extensive background in sales and sales management, has been vice president of advertising at The State since 2011. The State and the Observer are part of McClatchy, which operates 29 daily news operations in 14 states. Prior to Columbia, Heller led teams at The Dallas Morning News and The Star-Ledger in New Jersey.
In his new role in Charlotte, Heller will lead the Observer’s sales teams, overseeing all digital and print product advertising. He replaces Kelly Mirt, now publisher and vice president of advertising for The Wichita Eagle, another McClatchy company.
