Mixed report on on-time flights
Nearly 78 percent of flights landed on time at the Charlotte airport in August, an improvement over less than 73 percent a year earlier, according to federal transportation statistics released Thursday.
Despite that improvement, Charlotte's on-time ranking among 32 major U.S. airports dropped from 18th in August 2007 to 21st in the same month this year.
Through the first eight months of this year, Charlotte ranked 11th among airports, with an on-time arrival rate of almost 77 percent. That's an improvement from 26th and 67.5 percent in the same period last year.
US Airways, Charlotte's dominant carrier, posted an August on-time arrival rate of nearly 81 percent nationwide – third-best among major U.S. airlines. From January to August, more than 79 percent of US Airways flights landed on time – No. 1 among major carriers.
