Observer reporter recognized in business writing contest

The Society of American Business Editors and Writers on Thursday announced that Observer business reporter Caroline McMillan Portillo was among the winners in its annual “Best in Business” competition.
McMillan Portillo won the small business category for a collection of stories, which included articles on businesses affected by the Affordable Care Act, an appliance dealer working his way out of a bankruptcy and the impact of the federal government shutdown on small businesses.
In a category for student journalists, Caitlin McCabe, a senior at UNC Chapel Hill, won for a story she wrote for the Observer on backlogged unemployment benefits. Observer staff
