Crescent Communities is moving forward with plans to demolish a former Goodyear car shop uptown, making way for the planned Tryon Place mixed-use development.
The Goodyear at South Tryon and Stonewall Streets closed in 2014, after Crescent first announced its plans to build a new office tower on the site. Since then, the space has been used for arts events sponsored by Crescent, and the lot in front of the Goodyear has been used for daily parking.
County records show Crescent has started the process of pulling demolition permits for the Goodyear building. That demolition will represent the first concrete, on-the-ground work to start building the Tryon Place project. A spokeswoman for Crescent said the demolition will happen later this year.
“Soon, crews will take down the Goodyear building that most recently housed our innovative Skyline Artist in Residence program, known locally as the Goodyear Arts program,” said Emily Turk. The arts program has since moved to 516 N. College Street. “We look forward to sharing more information as it becomes available.”
Tryon Place is planned to be about 40 stories tall, according to marketing materials, with more than 700,000 square feet of office space. At ground level, the development would include 30,000 square feet of shops and restaurant. The development could also include a full-service hotel with up to 450 rooms. Crescent hasn’t announced a set timeline for construction, and is searching for an anchor tenant for the office building.
The Stonewall Street corridor is undergoing a massive makeover. Across the street from the Tryon Place site, Lincoln Harris and Goldman Sachs are wrapping up demolition on the former Charlotte Observer building, after acquiring the property for $34.1 million earlier this year. They’re planning a major mixed-use project with office towers and more on the site. At 615 South College Street, next to the Westin, Portman plans to top out the 19-story 615 South College office tower this fall.
Down Stonewall Street, at the light rail station, Crescent is building 450 apartments and a Whole Foods, and developing two hotels. Across the street from that, at Stonewall and Caldwell streets, Northwood Ravin is gearing up to start work on a 20-story, mixed-use high-rise project with apartments and retail. Next to that, at the former Actor’s Theatre, Proffitt Dixon is under contract to buy the site and build a 230-unit apartment project.
And next to that, the county-owned Bob Walton Plaza office building is slated to be sold to a private developer, demolished and remade as part of the Brooklyn Village redevelopment.
