Real estate records show Duke Energy has purchased a big chunk of land across the street from its headquarters building for a big chunk of change.
The Charlotte-based company paid $27.5 million for about 2 acres of land on South Tryon Street, next to the Harvey B. Gantt Center, real estate records show. The site is currently a surface parking lot.
The company bought the land in two separate deals, from Consolidated Realty Corp. and Eastern Federal Corp., that closed May 31. Duke’s plans for the site weren’t immediately clear.
The 48-story Duke Energy Center opened at South Tryon and Stonewall Streets in 2010. Duke Energy also owns a building a block away on Stonewall Street that dates to 1975, a brown office building with neon lights on the side.
