Members of the public have a chance Monday to tell Charlotte City Council what they think about plans to build an office building in the heart of South End, on a site now occupied by Common Market, other local buildings and an empty lot that was used for Food Truck Friday.
The rezoning plan is up for a hearing Monday’s council meeting. Assuming the hearing isn’t deferred and major problems don’t emerge, Charlotte City Council would then vote on the plan next month. Citizens have the chance to attend these meetings and tell City Council if they are for or against proposed projects, and why.
Austin-based Dimensional Fund Advisors plans to build an East Coast headquarters on the site, which is being developed by Cousins Properties. The firms have agreed to design changes, such as adding retail on each corner of the triangular site, in an attempt to address neighbor’s concerns about the area’s changing character. The project will also include public parking, shops and outdoor seating areas and plazas.
The South End project is the most prominent proposal scheduled for a hearing next week, but City Council has a full plate. This is the first meeting for newly sworn in council members, and projects up for discussion or a vote include new townhouses on Pineville-Matthews Road and retail and offices on Louise Avenue in an old snack factory.
A massive, mixed-use project at Sharon and Colony roads in SouthPark – which would include almost 1,000 residences, retail and office buildings in place of the Colony apartments – is also scheduled for a hearing. (You can see the full agenda here)
If you decide to come, be warned: City Council is planning to start their Monday meeting at 4 p.m. and go until 10 p.m. The meeting will start with business items or council members to vote on, making this a rare combined business and zoning meeting. Council is scheduled to discuss any items left over at a follow-up meeting on Thursday.
