Morningstar Mini-Storage is planning to build a new self-storage facility on North College Street just outside the I-277 loop.
The company has a sign at the site, and has filed preliminary plans with the city of Charlotte in advance of building. The site, currently used for industrial buildings, would be converted to a three-story, climate-controlled self-storage facility not to exceed 100,000 square feet.
The plans don’t include retail or a mix of uses, which aren’t required because of the site’s industrial zoning.

Charlotte is seeing a boom in self-storage in more urban locations, as small apartments leave renters in need of more space for their stuff. Morningstar recently opened a multistory South Boulevard storage facility, and developers are preparing to build dense, mixed-use self storage facilities on Central Avenue, West Boulevard and Prosperity Church Road.
