A reader emailed me this week with a question: What is taking so long to get started with construction at the Publix site in Cotswold on Randolph Road?
There’s been a sign in front of the site announcing the new supermarket for months (“Your new favorite supermarket hasn’t opened yet”). It’s directly across from a Harris Teeter, near North Sharon Amity Road and Cotswold Elementary School.
Publix lists the store as opening next year, but demolition hasn’t begun on the existing office building. The reader who emailed me was skeptical about that claim, since we’re already in June.
I asked Publix spokeswoman Kimberly Reynolds what the latest information is on when work might start on the site. She said the company is still working through permitting issues and doesn’t have an exact timetable to share. Information listed on Mecklenburg County’s website doesn’t show any demolition permits issued yet.
So the answer appears to be: Stay tuned. The project is still going, but there’s no clear answer on how soon we’ll see movement on Randolph Road.
