Topgolf, which opened its first location in Charlotte on Friday, has confirmed it hopes to open its second area entertainment center near UNC Charlotte.
The second location would be in a major new development at the West Mallard Creek Church Road and I-85 intersection, about 26 miles from Topgolf’s first Charlotte location. Construction of the second Topgolf is contingent on Charlotte City Council approving the rezoning of the site, a decision that is expected soon.
Topgolf’s first Charlotte facility is a 65,000 square-foot entertainment hub near Arrowood Road and I-485 with climate-controlled hitting bays, a full-service restaurant and bar, private event space, flat-screen TVs and more. Topgolf executives say the excitement around the first Charlotte location opening prompted them to pursue a second one “right away.”
“This investment will provide a recreation amenity for our community and those nearby, add jobs to our employment base and support local schools and charities through their community engagement programs,” University City Partners Executive Director Darlene Heater said in a statement Friday.
Charter Properties and Browder Group Real Estate are behind the proposed 66-acre development near UNCC that would also include shops, restaurants and hundreds of apartments. At a public hearing on the Topgolf rezoning request last month, several neighbors voiced opposition to putting in a Topgolf in that location, citing traffic, noise and other disturbances.
Chris Callaway, Topgolf’s chief development officer, also said Friday that Charlotte’s rapid population growth, demographics, climate and business-friendly culture make it “ideal for Topgolf.”
Topgolf notes that each of its locations generates about 500 jobs. Citing a third-party audit, the company also says its second Charlotte location is projected to exceed $264.5 million in economic output over a 10-year period.
Topgolf’s Charlotte location that opened Friday is the first in North Carolina, and the company’s 33rd worldwide. The next-nearest Topgolf facility is 230 miles away, in Alpharetta, Ga.
