A new brewery plans to open in a fast-changing area off West Morehead Street, right behind The Burger Co. and Rhino Market.
The yet-to-be-named brewery will be at 800 Grandin Road, in a building formerly occupied by an industrial equipment supplier called Lubromation Inc. The building was sold for $1.17 million in May to Matt Browder of Browder Group Real Estate, property records show.
Browder, who also owns the adjacent Rhino Market property, said the new brewery owners have signed a lease at the 10,500 square-foot building and are hoping to open in early 2018. It’s a new brewery concept, he added, though he declined to say who the owners are.
“The building itself makes sense for a brewery. It has high ceilings, it’s an old warehouse building,” said Browder, who also owns the Wooden Robot building in South End and the property where Dunkin’ Donuts sits nearby.
Browder said the up-and-coming area, dubbed FreeMoreWest, is as an ideal spot for new breweries, restaurants and other retail.
“You’re right outside downtown, and it’s not that far from South End. It’s an opportunity to lock in a rent that is probably going to go up,” Browder said.
The architect leading the project is Connie Spencer of Spencer Architects, who designed Olde Mecklenburg Brewery’s renovation.
