Reid’s Fine Foods, the longtime Charlotte food purveyor known for its popular meat department, gift baskets and cooking classes, is opening a location at SouthPark mall.
The specialty foods store will be at 4331 Barclay Downs Drive, in the space formerly occupied by City Tavern, and before that, San Antonio’s Modern Mexican.
Reid’s owner Tom Coker said the company is aiming to open the store by Oct. 1 at the latest. “We definitely want to be open before the holiday season,” he told the Observer.
The new location, which is 8,200 square feet, will feature an expanded patio and indoor dining area, an expanded cheese and bakery department and an expanded gift department. It’ll also sell locally grown produce, wines and freshly prepared meals.
“We like the idea of being in the SouthPark mall area in terms of building the brand. People come from a 100-mile radius to shop at the mall,” Coker said.
“We believe it’d be a great way to continue to build our brand in Charlotte and also regionally as we look to grow outside of Charlotte.
Coker said Reid’s eventually hopes to expand within North Carolina into Winston-Salem and the Chapel Hill and Durham region, as well as into Columbia and Greenville in South Carolina.
The Reid’s in SouthPark, Coker said, will employ between 45 and 50 people in a range of positions, from servers to clerks and butchers.
Reid’s opened in the 1920s in a building on Providence Road. Although the original store was small, it had a loyal following among longtime Charlotteans.
It moved into uptown in the 1990s and expanded its emphasis on wine, fine foods and custom-cut meats. That uptown location, at what is now the 7th Street Public Market, closed in 2010.
