Morganton’s first Walmart Neighborhood Market is now open.
The store at 1001 N. Green St. had a brief ribbon cutting ceremony Wednesday morning and will operate 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
The new Neighborhood Market sells groceries and offers pickup for a variety of items like toys and home decor bought and shipped for free on Walmart.com.
“Walmart has been an excellent community partner here in Morganton and Burke County for many, many years, and I’m glad to see the company expanding in the city,” Morganton Mayor Mel Cohen said in a statement.
The Neighborhood Market concept is Walmart’s answer to the traditional grocery store. The Morganton location is approximately 41,000 square feet, the size of a typical market like Harris Teeter. The new store will employ about 95 people.
Walmart is the biggest grocer in the Charlotte area by market share, right above Harris Teeter, according to sales-tracking firm Chain Store Guide. Walmart’s been expanding aggressively in Charlotte with the Neighborhood Market concept: Six new stores operated in the metro area last year, up from two the year before.
