Several retailers with a local presence said this week they will take on thousands of workers to staff stores during the busy holiday shopping season.
Among others across the U.S. planning to ramp up holiday hiring, Belk said it will hire 350 workers at its Jonesville fulfillment center, Toys “R” Us will hire 40,000 employees at its stores and distribution centers and Kohl’s anticipates it will hire 69,000 workers at its stores and distribution and e-commerce centers, as well as in credit operations.
Many of the jobs are at fulfillment and distribution centers, which facilitate orders made from the fast-growing online shopping sector.

Belk plans to hire 350 seasonal employees at its e-commerce fulfillment center in Jonesville, S.C., which is about 72 miles southwest of Charlotte.
The retailer is hiring order fulfillment workers who will be responsible for shipping and receiving, picking and packing merchandise, inventory control and/or equipment operation, Belk said in a statement.
All positions for which Belk is hiring are full-time jobs, and high-performing employees have the opportunity to transition to full-time Belk employees after 90 days, the retailer said this week.
First shift positions start at $10 an hour, Belk said, and increase to $10.50 an hour after 90 days. Second shift positions start at $11 an hour and increase to $11.50 after 90 days. Belk also said it offers overtime pay, which is 1.5 times the standard rate. Further, throughout the season, Belk said it will offer several cash bonus and other incentive opportunities for workers who meet performance standards.

Toys ‘R’ Us
Toys “R” Us will hire 40,000 employees at its stores and distribution centers throughout the U.S. Most jobs are part-time, Toys “R” Us said, and seasonal employees average 18 to 20 hours a week, and up to 30 hours during peak season.
The retailer said, however, it will also offer seasonal workers the chance to work “significantly more hours than in previous years,” and it will provide extra hours to current employees. Interested applicants can apply online at Toysrusinc.com/careers/holiday.
Interviewing for seasonal jobs at Toys “R” Us stores begins this month, and new hires will start work in October. The retailer said it will keep staffing through December. Positions range from sales employees to stock crew.
Hiring is already underway for workers at the Toys “R” Us distribution centers nationwide, and will continue through November. Full- and part-time openings include warehouse workers in the receiving, storage and shipping departments, online order fulfillment coordinators and department managers, Toys “R” Us said.
The company said last year, 20 percent of its seasonal workforce retained their jobs after Christmas.
The retailer operates five Toys “R” Us and Babies “R” Us stores in the Charlotte region, according to its website.
Department store chain Kohl’s expects to hire more than 69,000 seasonal workers this year. That means an average of 50 new workers per store, the retailer said, in addition to about 9,500 seasonal workers at its distribution and e-commerce fulfillment centers and about 660 seasonal credit operations positions.
Hiring began this month, and most jobs will be filled by mid-November, Kohl’s said. Hiring at the company’s distribution and e-commerce fulfillment centers began in August.
