The new downtown Belmont restaurant started by the Jonas Brothers’ dad, Kevin Sr., has delayed its much-anticipated opening.
Because of construction and weather delays, Nellie’s Southern Kitchen will now open in the first quarter of 2016.
“We knew there would be challenges in renovating a building that’s more than 100 years old,” Jonas said. “We’d rather be deliberate in our renovations than rush to meet our hoped-for completion date.”
The 10,000-square-foot restaurant at 36 N. Main St. will have a lunch/dinner menu with Southern-style items like fried chicken, biscuits and gravy, shrimp and grits, and chicken and dumplings.
Nellie’s has been conducting auditions for singers and musicians to serve on its wait staff and plans to hire 75-100, the family said in a statement this week. Those interested in applying can learn more on the restaurant’s Facebook page.
The restaurant is named after Jonas’ maternal grandmother. The Jonas family says it can trace its N.C. roots to the 1760s, and that family members worked in textile mills in the area from the early 1900s to the late ’80s. About 60 relatives still live in the area.
