Continuing its push into North Carolina, Publix will open a store in Boone in 2017.
The new supermarket will be on the site of a former K-Mart at Blowing Rock Road and Postal Street, about a mile down the road from Appalachian State University’s campus and directly across the street from Harris Teeter.
The store will be about 49,000 square feet and will include a drive-through Publix Pharmacy, according to a statement from the Florida-based grocer this week.
A typical Publix store will take on between 125 and 150 workers, with the majority being local hires, Publix added.
Never miss a local story.
Publix has been expanding rapidly thoughout North Carolina since opening its first store in the state in Ballantyne in early 2014. The grocer competes closely with Matthews-based Harris Teeter and often builds its new stores close to Harris Teeter stores.
This will be Publix’s first Boone store. The grocer operates a supermarket on Hendersonville Road in Asheville and plans to open one in nearby Weaverville in 2017.
