For this Top Workplaces report, The Charlotte Observer teamed with WorkplaceDynamics, a Pennsylvania-based survey firm that has partnered with more than 40 newspapers and surveyed nearly 2.5 million employees last year.
Through print and online stories that ran earlier this year, The Observer invited companies to participate. Workplace Dynamics reached out to 1,070 companies with at least 35 employees in the Charlotte region (Cabarrus, Gaston, Iredell, Lincoln, Mecklenburg and Union counties in North Carolina, and Lancaster and York counties in South Carolina) to participate. Of those, 80 companies agreed to be surveyed.
Of the 13,162 surveys sent to those company employees, 8,889 were answered.
Employees filled out paper or online surveys, ranking statements regarding pay, benefits, workplace mood and company leadership. Some of the statements included: “My manager cares about my concerns,” “This job has met or exceeded the expectations I had when I started” and “I believe this company is going in the right direction.” Responses determined which companies are Top Workplaces.
Never miss a local story.
Companies had to meet a response rate of at least 35 percent. Employers with 85 or fewer employers were required to have at least 30 responders.
Workplace Dynamics played no role in the writing or editing of stories for this publication.
The final Top Workplaces list includes 50 winning companies, grouped by size: Small (fewer than 150 employees), Midsize (up to 499 employees) and Large (500-plus employees).
