The NC Rural Economic Development Center has awarded nearly $680 million in grants to more than 1,000 organizations since 1988. The private, nonprofit program is designed to assist rural areas with economic development and infrastructure.
The program did not begin using grants for job creation until 2004. While all grants have a recipient, not all of them list a business name or class.
As of May 16, about $103 million remained to be paid on 615 projects. The map and chart reflect data on these grants acquired by The News & Observer from The Rural Center. Grants are typically paid to a town, county or other public entity. Search by any of the criteria below or enter a specific recipient name or search term, for example Kinston, Orange, water. The map and chart will filter the results.
