A North Mecklenburg High football player has been charged with misdemeanor death by vehicle in connection with an Aug. 11 wreck in Huntersville that killed a 14-year-old passenger in his vehicle.
Kalvin Raquez McCollum was charged with misdemeanor death by vehicle, careless and reckless driving, and driving with no operators license, said Huntersville police.
The passenger was Enjoneah Reel, a member of the school’s track team in addition to being a cheerleader. In May, she competed in the conference championships and finished fifth in the long jump, third in shot put and was fourth in the 100 meter dash. Fellow students said McCollum and Reel were dating.
McCollum turned himself in to the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office, was processed, and was subsequently released on a $5,000.00 bond.
The head-on accident occurred just a week before the start of the high school football season. It happened about 5 p.m. near the intersection of Beatties Ford Road and McCoy Road.
North Mecklenburg officials told the Observer that Reel was killed on impact. McCollum was rushed to a local hospital for surgery. McCollum, a 6-foot-3, 210-pound senior was a star for the Vikings last season, collecting 98 tackles and four sacks. He is considered a college prospect.
