Davidson College President Carol Quillen and her husband are donating $1 million to Davidson for scholarships.
The gift from Quillen and her husband George McLendon, vice president for research at Carolinas HealthCare System, was announced Monday by the college. It’s part of a $425 million fund raising campaign for Davidson. In the past year the college has brought in $20 million for scholarships.
The money will be used to help enroll students from all socio-economic backgrounds. Through a program called the Davidson Trust, the liberal arts college near Charlotte promises to cover 100 percent of students’ calculated financial need with grants and campus employment.
“We’re asking other people to invest significantly in Davidson in part because of what Davidson has given them,” Quillen said in the college’s announcement on its website. “Davidson has given us more than we could ever repay or even express. We also passionately believe that our communities urgently need the leaders from all backgrounds that Davidson can distinctively provide.”
