A $250,000 challenge grant from Sally Belk Gambrell Bridgford of the Gambrell Foundation brings the YWCA of the Central Carolinas only $100,000 away from the $1 million needed to completely remodel its locker rooms.
The goal of the donation is to encourage and motivate other donors to raise the remaining money, said Kirsten Sikkelee, YWCA’s chief executive officer.
Sarah Belk Gambrell, Bridgford’s mother, donated money in 2001 that reopened a fitness center that had been closed. Her daughter’s donation will help renovate the locker rooms of that fitness center. The Gambrell Foundation is connected to the Belk department stores dynasty
The fundraising began one year ago, and Sikkelee said they hope to be completed within the next month.
The locker rooms have not undergone a major renovation since 1965. The renovations include a complete makeover – adding air conditioning, nicer amenities, better ventilation and updated lighting.
The renovations are scheduled to be completed by November.
