Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police say they have found the mother accused of abandoning a baby girl Thursday night in an apartment community off Remount Road.
Investigators sent out a statement Friday morning saying a woman claiming to be the child’s mother had come forward, and she was telling a different story than the man who called 911 to report the abandoned child.
The baby girl remains in the custody of the Department of Social Services, and an investigation has been launched into how the baby found her way into the arms of the man, police said.
“At this time, it appears they are known to one another,” police said of the mother and the man who reported the baby was abandoned.
Never miss a local story.
Investigators say they first received a 911 call at 6:59 a.m. Friday in reference to an abandoned infant in the 1600 block of Remount Road. Officers were told by a male caller that he had met a female and her infant Thursday at 9 p.m., while she was walking through the Lakewood Manor complex on Watson Drive.
The female asked him to watch the baby for a while and then never returned, police said in a statement. The woman was described as a young, dark skinned black female, approximately 170 to 180 pounds, and was last seen wearing shorts and a tank top.
The infant is 6 to 8 months old.
The Lakewood Manor is a small two-story apartment community of about 50 units, not far from the intersection of West Boulevard and Remount Road.
