Nearly 15,000 residents from Mecklenburg and Cabarrus counties were without power for hours Sunday evening.
Late Sunday evening, more than 12,500 Concord Electric customers were still without electricity, the city of Concord website showed. The city called the power outage “widespread” and attributed it to a fire that damaged city and Duke Energy equipment. “Significant repairs are necessary,” the city said, and “crews expect the work to extend well into the night.”
Nearly 4,000 Duke Energy customers lost power near Mountain Island Lake around 4:30 p.m., after Sunday afternoon’s storms, Duke’s outage map showed.
Rainy weather around Charlotte may continue through Tuesday, according to the National Weather Service.
Cabarrus and Rowan counties were under a flood advisory from the National Weather Service Sunday evening. Union County residents were warned to look out for very heavy rain and avoid flooded roads.
