A deputy in Rutherford County was injured late Tuesday when a suspect on the run fire shots at pursuing squad cars outside of Forest City, about 63 miles west of Charlotte on U.S. 74.
One round struck Deputy Jeffery Burgess’s windshield, officials said, and he was hit with metal fragments. Burgess was transported by EMS to Cleveland Regional Medical Center, treated for minor injuries and released, according to a statement from the Rutherford County Sheriff’s Office.
The suspect who fired the shots is still at large and a name was not released Wednesday morning.
The incident began at 10:52 p.m. Tuesday, when an officer with the Forest City Police Department tried to pull over a pickup truck and the motorist fled through Forest City into Ellenboro.

Rutherford County Sheriff’s Deputies took over the chase near Ellenboro on Business 74, officials said.
Occupants of the suspect “truck” fired several shots toward pursuing officers.
The investigation is ongoing and detectives are asking for the public’s assistance in finding the suspect vehicle. It may be displaying N.C. tag WVM4712, officials said.
