A Charlotte man accused Thursday of severely abusing a 2-year-old boy is now facing a murder charge, officials said Friday.
The boy, who has not been named, died over night from his injuries while at Carolinas Medical Center, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police say.
Christopher Sims, 25, remains in custody after the charge was upgraded to murder, police said.
Detectives said the investigation began Wednesday when staff at Carolinas Medical Center called to say they were treating a child that was suffering multiple injuries, including a traumatic brain injury. The child was unable to breathe on his own, police reported.

During the investigation, the child’s mother and her boyfriend, Sims, were interviewed, as well as the hospital staff. The initial investigation determined the boy was left alone with Sims during the time the injuries occurred, at a home in the 1800 block of Griers Grove, police said. The child’s mother was not named.
Sims was originally charged with felony child abuse inflicting serious injury, police said.
