The mother accused of attempting to smother her 1-year-old son in his hospital room has been ordered by a judge to not have contact with her child if she posts her $275,000 bail.
Maggie Dixon, 32, of Laurinburg was charged with attempted first-degree murder and felony child abuse inflicting serious bodily injury. Prosecutors say she tried to kill her son at Levine Children’s Hospital on Sunday night. At a brief court hearing Tuesday, Dixon learned what her bail was and had her next court appearance set for June 30.
According to prosecutors, the child had been in the hospital for an issue not related to child abuse. WSOC-TV reported that the toddler had been hospitalized for pneumonia.

When Dixon was alone with her child, hospital staff later told investigators, monitors showed “abnormalities” in his vital signs, including fluctuations in breathing.
Video surveillance footage later showed that she attempted to smother the child, according to a Charlotte-Mecklenburg police report. WSOC-TV, citing police sources, said Dixon tried to smother the child four times within 15 minutes.
At the Tuesday hearing, the judge ordered Dixon be placed on an electric monitor if she were released. She appeared in court via satellite, and remains in Mecklenburg County Jail.
