A man and a woman are accused of child abuse after officials discovered they kept an infant child locked in a cage.
The Madison County Sheriff’s Office said deputies and the social services department responded to a home in Mars Hill, north of Asheville, on Wednesday regarding a child neglect complaint, when they found the child in the “self-made” cage upstairs.
The child was freed and detectives determined the infant was in the cage for at least 23 hours a day, the sheriff’s office said. The child was only given minimal amounts of food each day, according to officials.
