Union County officials have hired a former Mecklenburg assistant county manager to handle the same role for them.
Michelle Lancaster started work Tuesday in Union County. Her starting salary is $143,000 a year, county officials said.
In Mecklenburg, Lancaster started in 1998 as an assistant to county commissioners, but in 2000, former County Manager Harry Jones hired her as his assistant. Under Jones, she became a general manager and then an assistant county manager under interim County Manager Bobbie Shields after county commissioners fired Jones in 2013.
Lancaster was known as a loyal adviser to Jones. After county commissioners named Dena Diorio as county manager, Diorio removed John McGillicuddy, another assistant county manager, from her executive team, but she retained Lancaster – naming her director of the county’s Consolidated Health and Human Services Agency.
Never miss a local story.
In January, Lancaster “voluntarily resigned,” Diorio said then.
Union County officials praised Lancaster’s collaborative leadership abilities and extensive experience in dealing with legislative issues locally as well as in Raleigh and Washington, D.C.
Lancaster will officially be introduced to the public at Monday night’s board of commissioners meeting.
She replaces Matthew Delk, who left Union County last July for a job as the county administrator in Pickens County, S.C.
