A large street tree fell at the corner of Queens Road West and Norton Road, city officials said Friday afternoon as they advised motorists to avoid the area.
City crews were on the site now and working to remove the tree before it fell completely. The inbound lane of Queens Road West and a single lane of Norton Road is expected to be blocked past 5 p.m. as crews remove the hazardous tree, but both lanes were expected to reopen later Friday evening.
The Observer reported in 2015 that many of the stately oaks planted along the streets in Myers Park, Dilworth and Elizabeth are reaching the end of their lives. More than half the city-maintained trees in older neighborhoods are in only fair health, an analysis of city data found.
