A woman was struck and killed early Monday while crossing South Tryon Street in southwest Charlotte, according to Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police.
It happened on northbound South Tryon at 4:07 a.m. near Streelecroft Parkway. The pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene by Medic. The woman has not yet been identified.
Investigators responded to the 13200 block of South Tryon and found a pedestrian in the road and a 2002 Toyota Celica stopped nearby. An initial investigation indicates Matthew Owens, the driver of the car, was traveling north in the center lane when he struck the pedestrian. Owens, 45, remained on the scene. He was not injured.
Alcohol use and excessive speed are not suspected to be contributing factors, officials said.

The pedestrian was not in a crosswalk and was wearing dark clothing.
