Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department said there is no direct evidence at this time to indicate an intentionally set fire June 24 at Briar Creek Road Baptist Church was a hate crime, according to a statement.
The predominantly African-American church was set on fire around 1 a.m., and it took 75 firefighters to manage the blaze in just over an hour, said Senior Fire Investigator David Williams.
Briar Creek Road Baptist Church is one of several fires at largely African-American churches in the South in the last week.
The FBI has also opened a preliminary inquiry at the east Charlotte church.
“This is a priority case for all the agencies involved,” CMPD said in the statement.
