A 32-year-old Marine is the victim in the eighth reported shark bite on the North Carolina coast after officials say he was bitten near Surf City and hospitalized over the weekend.
The Marine was stationed at Camp Lejeune was treated at the training facility’s Naval Hospital at about 10:41 p.m. Saturday and treated for lacerations to his right hand and forearm, according to a Marine Corps. spokesman. A friend took him to the hospital after the attack.
He was released at 3:29 a.m. Sunday. His name has not been released.
Surf City is a seaside town that straddles Pender and Onslow counties.
Last week, a 7-foot shark bit a 68-year-old man as he and his adult son swam in waist-deep water near a lifeguard station on Ocracoke Island. The victim, identified as Andrew Costello, is expected to recover.
Saturday’s incident is the eighth reported shark attack on North Carolina beaches this summer.
