The Carolina Thread Trail will formally open a 1.2-mile expansion of the South Fork Rail Trail in Lincolnton on Friday.
The extension, which begins on the south side of Southfork Road, makes the natural source and gravel path 2 miles long. The trailhead is at 2648 Laboratory Road.
Gastonia attorney Johnathan Rhyne Jr., former N.C. House minority leader, and his family donated the easement for the trail. The trail is within the 324-acre Rhyne Preserve protected by the Catawba Lands Conservancy.
The extension follows the South Fork River and offers views of the rolling landscape, the river and a waterfall. The trail is open for hiking and biking.
