Ballantyne-area residents were stunned Monday after one man was fatally shot and another severely injured in their neighborhood off Rea Road.
Gunfire erupted just after midnight on Chelton Ridge Lane in the Stillwater Townhome community.
Paramedics pronounced Joel Vasquez, 24, dead. Another man was taken to Carolinas Medical Center with life-threatening injuries. His name and condition were not released.
Investigators late Monday also would not release a motive for the shooting, which neighbors told the Observer could be drug-related.
Someone appeared to be trying to get inside a townhome at 11936 Chelton Ridge Lane. But the person instead kicked in the door at 11932. Residents called 911 after hearing gunshots.
Police believe Vasquez lived in the townhome but could not say whether the other victim lived there. Investigators declined to confirm what prompted the shootings. A gash in door at 11932 was protected with thick black tape. And the bloody sidewalk had been hosed off by late afternoon as residents got back to their routines – collecting mail, jogging and returning home from work.
The shootings shocked Jim Price, who said police sirens woke him in the early hours Monday.
Vasquez, who listed 11936 Chelton Ridge Lane as his address on one court document, had a criminal history, including breaking and entering and larceny. He was convicted in 2006 of possessing marijuana, the documents show.
