Despite their best efforts, a 17-year-old and two of his friends couldn't save his truck from being demolished by a freight train.
Around 11:30 p.m. Sunday, Trooper E.J. Phillips responded to a crash involving a 2003 Ford F-250 pickup truck and a Norfolk Southern train on the tracks along U.S. 70 in Hildebran.
No one was inside the truck at the time of the collision and there were no injuries.
The driver of the truck, Travis Jeffrey Long, 17, of Connelly Springs, has been charged with careless and reckless driving.
Phillips said the accident is still under investigation and he is still looking into the reason behind the truck leaving the highway and ending up on the tracks.
The vehicle ran off the road and came to rest on the tracks, Phillips said.
The driver and passengers were out of the vehicle, trying to push the vehicle off the tracks for about 45 minutes to an hour before the train came.
Despite the driver and passengers attempting to wave down the train, it was unable to stop and collided with the truck, dragging it along the tracks and causing it to overturn and come to rest in a ditch.
