Fund gives youths ‘the thrill of summer camp’

The Carolina Panthers Charities advisory board and team mascot Sir Purr gave a $5,000 donation to The Charlotte Observer’s Summer Camp Fund on Friday morning.

The Carolina Panthers Charities advisory board and team mascot Sir Purr gave a $5,000 donation to The Charlotte Observer’s Summer Camp Fund on Friday morning.

Over the last few months, readers have donated $78,000, an all-time high for the fund, which started in 2009. The money will be used next summer to send children from low-income families to day and residential camps.

Panthers founder and majority owner Jerry Richardson was the fund’s honorary chairman this year.

“We are very appreciative of the Panthers, Jerry Richardson and the many readers who contributed,” said Rick Thames, executive editor of the Charlotte Observer. “Thanks to them, a record number of deserving children will experience the thrill of summer camp.”
