The Charlotte Area Transit System said it will end its bus service at 6 p.m. Wednesday because of the storm.
CATS said its light rail service will continue on its normal schedule.
Earlier in the day, around 1:30 p.m. CATS stopped running its Express and Regional Express buses. Those buses serve neighboring counties as well as parts of Mecklenburg. CATS stressed that several local bus routes that provide service along portions of Express and Regional Express routes are still running.
The homepage also lists other routes that are being detoured or delayed.
Changes will be updated at the top of the homepage. CATS also will be sending updates for commuters on its Twitter account, @CATSridetransit.
People can still call the customer service number 704-336-7433 to ask about availability of service and routes.
Street supervisors are constantly checking road conditions to determine if routes need to change, spokeswoman Judy Dellert-O’Keef said. That would typically happen for neighborhood routes, she said.
Outside Charlotte, several smaller bus lines were not operating Wednesday. Those include Cabarrus County transportation and Rowan Transit services.
The storm also is affecting train travel.
Amtrak said Wednesday morning that the Piedmont line between Charlotte and Raleigh was operating normally, but the late-day runs have been canceled.
In the eastern Carolinas, the Palmetto line between Savannah and New York City and the Silver Star line between Miami and New York City are shut down.
North Carolina transportation officials said passengers can keep track of train service by checking www.ncbytrain.org.
