A 28-year-old man was killed when he lost control of his vehicle on a patch of ice and crashed into a power pole early Friday in east Charlotte, police say.

Another man suffered minor injuries in the wreck, which forced the shutdown of a portion of Eastway Drive.

Killed in the wreck on Eastway Drive was Thomas Andrew Lyall. He was driving the 1999 Jeep Wrangler that went off the road about 3 a.m. in the 2300 block of Eastway Drive, near Townsend Avenue, between Arnold Drive and Kilborne Drive. That is north of Central Avenue.

Police Sgt. David Sloan said Lyall was northbound on Eastway Drive when his vehicle hit a large patch of ice. The SUV slid sideways and went off the right side of the road. The Jeep plowed through a pile of snow and slammed into a utility pole, breaking the pole in three pieces. Sloan said the vehicle then flipped onto its side.

Lyall, who was wearing a seat belt, died at the scene. The passenger, a 31-year-old man, was taken to Carolinas Medical Center by Medic. His injuries were described as non-life-threatening.

Police say ice, alcohol and speed appeared to be factors in the wreck.

Sloan said the crash remains under investigation, and anyone with information is asked to call detectives at 704-432-2169.

Duke Energy crews have been working to replace the pole, but at last check, officials said it could be 1 or 2 p.m. before repairs are made. Until then, police say, Eastway Drive remains closed between Arnold Drive and Kilborne Drive.
