One person was seriously hurt Monday morning when two trucks were involved in apparently separate crashes within a short distance of each other on Interstate 485 in northwest Mecklenburg County.

The wrecks were reported at about 6:30 a.m. on the inner loop of I-485, between the Brookshire Boulevard and Interstate 77 interchanges. A pickup truck and a commercial truck crashed while driving in the left lane.

The pickup truck hit the guardrail, but the commercial truck overturned, landing on its roof. One of the drivers was taken by Medic to the hospital with life-threatening injuries, authorities said.

The two wrecks forced police to close the left two lanes for more than an hour, causing long backups. The N.C. Highway Patrol is investigating whether ice on a bridge contributed to the wrecks. Steve Lyttle
