A Charlotte woman was killed Thursday morning when her SUV crossed the center line on Eastfield Road and collided with a pickup truck, police said.
Avis Gray Gabbert, 55, was driving a 2004 GMC Envoy that struck a 1997 Ford F-150 on a curve in the road near the Charlotte-Huntersville line, according to CharlotteMecklenburg police.
Investigators said Gabbert was eastbound in the 12500 block of Eastfield Road when her vehicle crossed the center line of the two-lane road. She and the two occupants of the westbound truck, the 44-year-old male driver and his 38-year-old female passenger, were wearing seat belts. The man and woman in the truck suffered serious but non-life-threatening injuries, according to police.
Investigators are not sure what caused Gabbert to cross the center line. They said alcohol and speed did not appear to be factors.
It was dry but foggy at the time of the crash, a little more than 90 minutes before sunrise.
Eastfield Road is a popular route for drivers between the Concord area and Interstate 77 near Huntersville. The road was closed for much of the morning commute while police worked to clear the wreckage and conduct their investigation.
Police ask any witnesses to contact investigators at 704-432-2169.
