Dr. Mehmet Oz, one of America’s most famous surgeons, is scheduled to appear in Mooresville this fall to raise money for free health care clinics across the Carolinas.
The host of “The Dr. Oz Show” on ABC-TV is being lined up for a daylong series of fundraisers, including a community walk, a free dental clinic, a health fair and a black-tie dinner at Trump National Golf Club, Charlotte, which is on Brawley School Road along Lake Norman in southern Iredell County.
A celebration with students from the Iredell-Statesville and Mooresville Graded school systems is planned at the Mooresville High School stadium.
Officials with Mooresville-based HealthReach Community Clinic announced Oz’s October appearance at a recent Mooresville Board of Commissioners meeting.
The free medical clinic serves Iredell County residents who lack health care insurance and whose only other option is to seek care at a hospital emergency room. Like other free clinics, HealthReach relies entirely on community donations to fund its budget.
Oz also will examine four or five HealthReach patients that day. Parts of his appearance might be broadcast live on his national show, HealthReach Executive Director Rory Crawford said.
Oz agreed to make what would be his third appearance in Mooresville over the years after HealthReach got a national sponsor for the event in Walgreens, said Susan Wolff, HealthReach director of development and communications.
HealthReach officials said they met with Oz in New York City in November about having him appear in town again. Crawford said Oz is scheduled to appear on Oct. 9, although the date is “fluid.”
Oz is longtime friends with John and Christy Mack, who also are scheduled to appear that day. John Mack is a Mooresville native who is a senior adviser and former CEO and chairman of the board at N.Y.-based Morgan Stanley.
The Mack family has given to many local causes, including financial help to open HealthReach and the Charles Mack Citizen Center.
A community walk benefiting the free medical clinics of the Carolinas will kick off the day’s events, starting and ending at Merinos Home Furnishings on South Main Street.
The free dental clinic is being sponsored by the nonprofit Missions of Mercy, and Oz’s HealthCorp initiative will sponsor the health fair at the Mack Center.
