The arrival of rain in the Charlotte region Monday morning triggered a series of wrecks on Interstate 77, Interstate 485 and East Independence Boulevard, among other roads.
Traffic remained a mess in several spots shortly before 10 a.m. Monday.
The big problem at 9:45 a.m. was on the inner loop of I-485. A truck and a small sedan collided near the ramp to South Boulevard, with at least one person injured.
That collision has snarled traffic for about 8 miles, back toward Matthews.
Never miss a local story.
In I-77, three wrecks were reported between 8 and 9 a.m. At this time, all wrecks have been cleared, but traffic remains stop-and-go in places.
Collisions were reported near uptown and near Clanton Road on southbound I-77, but the biggest wreck was on southbound I-77 near Exit 28 in Cornelius. That incident involved five vehicles and injuries.
The first trouble spot was on inbound East Independence Boulevard around 7:15 a.m. A vehicle slammed into a building at a used car dealership near Eastway Drive. Inbound traffic was snarled for about an hour.
Here is the 9:55 a.m. update
Catawba Avenue construction ... The N.C. Department of Transportation closed the right eastbound lane Sunday night. It is scheduled to reopen at 6 a.m. Wednesday.
The lane is closed so crews can work in the $5.4 million project to build a diverging diamond interchange on Catawba Avenue at I-77. Motorists can expect delays on eastbound Catawba Avenue through Wednesday morning.
Davidson-Trade closure ... The intersection of Trade and Davidson streets in Charlotte’s uptown will be closed for two weeks, starting this morning, so crews can do advance work on the streetcar line. The intersection closure is slated from 9 a.m. Monday to 6 a.m. March 17.
Brevard Street closure ... The 200 block of Brevard Street, between Fifth and Sixth streets, will be closed from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday. This is being done so crews can work on the overhead line system with the Charlotte Area Transit System streetcar line.
