A statewide drill in South Carolina took place Tuesday and was observed by all public schools, by local and state Emergency Management, and by the South Carolina Broadcasters Association.
Weather alert radios were activated at 9 a.m. across South Carolina.
The same drill is planned for Wednesday morning in North Carolina.
Officials with the National Weather Service say Severe Weather Awareness Week is a time when Carolinas residents should consider the risks of tornadoes, severe thunderstorms and lightning. Those types of weather annually cause several deaths in the Carolinas.
Residents are encouraged to know how to make themselves aware of watches and warnings, as well as what to do if severe weather develops.
The theme for this year’s observance is “Be A Force of Nature.”
