No injuries were reported Monday afternoon in a pair of fires that were reported within five minutes of each other.
The first blaze broke out about 1:15 p.m. at an apartment in the 900 block of 20th Street NE. A smoke alarm alerted the resident, and crews put out a small fire on a night stand.
Damage was considered minor, fire officials said, and they determined the cause was discarded smoking materials.
Minutes later, crews were called to a home in the 1200 block of 12th Avenue SW. Crews found smoke coming from the windows of the home. Damage was considered major, officials said, and investigators determined the cause to be electrical.
Hickory firefighters got support from the Long View, St. Stephens, Mountain View and Conover fire departments.
