Truck cleared, North Tryon has reopened

Charlotte-Mecklenburg police say a truck struck the bridge at 16th Street. Authorities say engineers are checking the bridge for possible damage.

A portion of North Tryon Street in Charlotte was closed for about four hours Monday after a tractor-trailer got stuck under the 16th Street bridge.

The incident took place about 9:30 a.m. at the railroad overpass bridge a short distance north of uptown.

Police said the truck had driven under the bridge inbound and made a delivery. It got stuck on the outbound side. Police closed North Tryon Street in both directions and detoured traffic for several hours.

Authorities had to call in special equipment to free the truck, after a pair of wreckers was unable to pull the vehicle clear of the bridge. Charlotte-Mecklenburg police said engineers checked the bridge for possible damage, and the road was reopened about 1:30 p.m.
