Light-rail line construction in north Charlotte is forcing a change in Charlotte Area Transit System’s Route 39 bus service on Eastway Drive.
It is among several CATS bus line changes that went into effect Monday.
The Eastway bridge over the rail lines will be closed soon, causing the change on Route 39. CATS officials say buses now will turn left on Sugar Creek Road, then right on The Plaza, and right onto Eastway Drive to resume the route.
That means service north of The Plaza on Route 39 has been ended. CATS officials said riders can use Route 11 (North Tryon) to go farther north.
Other route changes that started Monday:
Route 2 (Ashley Road): Service along Mint Street and West Summit Avenue to Freedom Drive is discontinued. Instead, the route will follow West Morehead Street between Bank of America Stadium and Freedom Drive.
Route 29 (UNCC-SouthPark): Service in the university area is altered. Northbound service will leave from UNC Charlotte, follow University City Boulevard to W.T. Harris Boulevard and left on IBM Drive. Buses no longer will enter the Wells Fargo or Hewitt campuses. Service along Mallard Creek Church Road and North Tryon Street is ended (but maintained on Route 11-North Tryon).
Route 34 (Freedom Drive): One earlier trip and one later trip have been added. Service on Walnut Avenue, Sumter Avenue and State Street is discontinued. Those routes are served by Route 8 (Tuckaseegee Road).
Route 43 (Ballantyne): Inbound service now turns left on Sharon Road West from Park Road at the traffic light. Inbound service is discontinued along Hamlin Park Drive and Brandon Forest Drive. Those roads are served by Route 19 (Park Road).
Route 51 (Pineville Matthews): Service is added to downtown Matthews. The route now extends from the Park and Ride lot off Independence Boulevard, continuing on Sam Newell Road onto Trade Street to West John Street. Service is discontinued to Sycamore Commons along Windsor Square and Northeast Parkway. Windsor Square will be served by Route 17 (Commonwealth).
Concord Express: Service is adjusted to make fewer stops and follow Interstate 85. Service is discontinued to the Home Depot Park and Ride, Concord Mills, North Tryon Street, J.W. Clay Boulevard, and Cheddar’s Park and Ride. Three park-and-ride lots will be available on this route – Concord Big Lots, Charlotte Motor Speedway and a new lot of Ikea on Ikea Boulevard.
